Make plans
1. Invite your friends over for a combined planning meeting and dinner. Spread maps over the kitchen table and search the web for goodies – make planning a fun part of the journey.
2. Be realistic when planning – you can't see everything. Pick highlights and favourites along the way.
3. Add an extra day for spontaneous ideas or if the unexpected happens.
4. Choose smaller roads too, not only highways and see more along the way.
Check the paperwork
5. Check your car- and health insurance and make sure it covers everything you might need, for everyone in the car.
6. Bring passport, driver's license and other paperwork.
Hit the road
7. Service the car before you leave to make sure it's in the best shape...
8. ... and don't forget to check tyre pressure and oil levels as you go.
9. Take your time and don't overestimate your driving-skills.
10. Bring entertainment like music and books for the kids in the back and pillows and blankets for sleepy fellow travellers.
11. Never leave valuables in the car and lock it up properly whenever leaving it.
12. Make many stops along the way – especially if you have children in the car – smaller roads makes it easier to go for ice-cream or bathroom stops.
