Frida is currently finishing up her bachelor degree in teaching. As a nineteen year-old she decided to try her luck as an Au pair in San Francisco. It turned out to be a lucky shot and now she returns to her favourite city as often as possible. Here are some favourites.
Frida is more than happy to tell us about her second hometown San Francisco, and you can really tell that she loves the city!
– San Francisco is a big city, but at the same time the sea and the forests are always nearby. San Francisco has really got it all, she says with emphasis.
And she knows what she's talking about – all in all she's been she's been living in San Francisco for more than four years.
Fridahjalmarsson is sharing her best tips:
Drive along the scenic Highway 1
Rent a car and go for a drive south along the scenic Highway 1. The view is amazing! We've been going all the way down to LA, which takes about 5-6 hours and we are often going down to the surfer's mecca Santa Cruz. In the summer you can make stops along the way to buy fruits and vegetables from nearby farms.
Visit the vineyards in Napa Valley
Go visit one vineyard at a time and try wine tasting or join guided tours.
The tasting is often for free and there are plenty of different vineyards to choose from. Some are really large and palace-like!
Another bonus is the weather in Napa, it's often fair and sunny even if it's cloudy in San Francisco.
Admire the view from Marin Headlands
Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and turn left to the area called Marin Headlands. Here you'll find many beautiful spots for a picnic. A tip is to follow the road even when it's narrowing, most people turn back then, but the spots over there have got the best view.
The best outlook: Twin Peaks
This is the best outlook. I bring all my visitors here, it's really pretty and you can see the whole city from here!
My favourite beach: China Beach
This nice sandy beach is situated in the fine area Sea Cliff where the actor Robin Williams has his house. Unfortunately the water is not usually warm in San Francisco, but the beach is still really pretty.
Family fun: The Exploratorium
This is a fun place for both kids and adults. It's a kind of experimental work-shop area in a giant warehouse where you can try all sorts of things. Orientate yourself in the darkness of the Dome, feel an earthquake or build your own tornado, just to mention some. I would say this is suitable for anyone from 3-100 years of age.
Frida recommends...
Rent a car and make excursions! You really don't need to be nervous about driving in the US, it's both easy and convenient.
It's easy to find good food and nice restaurants in San Francisco. Here are two of Frida's favourites:
Kitaro
Kitaro is a nice sushi restaurant on Geary Boulevard. Very tasty sushi and price worthy.
Ploy II
I always pick this place for celebrations, if I get to choose! It's a small cosy Thai restaurant on the hippie street Haight Street and my absolute favourite in San Francisco. The Tom Kha-soup is excellent!
